Every month, I take photos of the site of the new Onehunga railway station, the old ITM building.
I wasn’t going to publish this week’s ones because the news concerning the new line is all too depressing, but as my last month’s photo has resurfaced elsewhere this weekend (BTW, my friend, that’s cool but don’t forget the required Creative Commons site attribution), I will reluctantly show you the latest in the sorry saga.
One Saturday, back in late November, there was a sign of action, with workers dumping stuff on the site and looking as if they were celebrating the...

At today’s ARC transport and urban development committee meeting, the general manager’s report confirms what many have been insisting about the true cost following the revised alignment for the Mt Roskill to Waterview section of State Highway 20 (SH20).
It says that with less property acquisition, this revised alignment is estimated to be cheaper than the previous alignment.
“However the State Highway 16 (SH16) improvements from St Lukes to Te Atatu now include more extensive works estimated to cost more. Therefore the combined SH20 and SH16 project costs are likely to be the same as the previously...

If the Onehunga line opens in July, there needs to be some decisions made quickly and a serious start on work in Princes St, Onehunga.
See if you can spot the difference:
Here is how the new Onehunga railway station site, the old ITM building, looked back in August:
Then in November, some tracks arrived and few workman popped by and dumped stuff:
So I was expecting by this week, to find something changed and a sign things are moving ahead, even though there seem to be endless issues about what the community wants and what sort of shops can accompany the station:
So what do i find this morning?
I...

Te Papapa, a stop on the forthcoming Onehunga line, will be an interesting experiment to see whether you can create interest in train use in a small pocket of Auckland.
Like many other small Auckland suburbs, some people seem to never have heard of, it’s hard to determine where Te Papapa starts and Onehunga ends. If you travel through Onehunga past it, you could imagine it was in fact Onehunga. It’s population in the 2001 census was 3081.
The train stop, between May Rd and Captain Springs Rd, has potential to be attractive to users as it’s in the middle of a light industrial...

So Onehunga is officially Brown.
A kind of muddy chocolately -type of brown.
New Maxx signs displaying Auckland’s rail lines show Onehunga line opening mid-2010 – which means there is no way back now.
In fact the scheduled date is July.
It’s exciting to see the Onehunga line listed.
Soon, all those Onehunga residents who use cars can consider the train.
Now all we need is the “airport” connection (a bus) listed on the map to be replaced with a rail link!

If you’re going by train today to BDO, (details here) notice when you arrive how Penrose train station’s Onehunga line connection is slowly taking shape.
Stand on the Penrose station, look towards the right in this picture and you can see the building of the Onehunga line platform and the track formation.
That platform is close and handy to Station Road, unlike the Penrose station, for which you have to walk on a footbridge.
Here is how the concrete platform is looking up close – still a lot of work to be done.

Onehunga’s planned new railway link and station continues to show signs of being the black sheep in the Auckland rail family.
What will it take to get it across the line?
It’s accepted the planned station site at the former ITM building is not ideal but, without being able to completely re-design the town, there’s not a lot of available and suitable space.
Local businesses also have been vocal in where they want it to suit their hopes of increased shop traffic and that continues to be debated. Having it closer to Dress Smart would be more ideal that the problems the ITM site brings, not just...

Onehunga becomes one of Auckland’s new railway hubs next year but it’s emerged that there are now some important unresolved issues and more funding is needed for the main station development.
Detailed designs are now being prepared for the platform and pedestrian access ways for the new Onehunga station at the former ITM site.
ONEHUNGA STATION: Old ITM store at lower end of Onehunga Mall
But there are some outstanding funding issues.
A plaza entrance from Onehunga Mall (and pedestrian access from both Princes St and Nielson St) is planned for the station as is a small temporary park...

TE PAPAPA: Construction of the station begins
Construction has begun of the new Te Papapa station, which will be used for the Onehunga line, opening mid next year.
It’s between May Rd and Captain Springs Rd in what feels like Onehunga but is the tiny Auckland suburb called Te Papapa (don’t miss out the last few letters or the rail line will have to go to the Wellington waterfront to the government museum!).
It’s alongside an apartment block in the heart of a light industrial area. It’s apparently in the vicinity of an old Te Papapa station that existed when Onehunga services...

PENROSE: The resumption of Onehunga services gets closer |Photo: Roger
As part of the return of the Onehunga line, which will open next year, preparation work has started in Penrose.
Penrose, Te Papapa and Onehunga are the new stations for the Onehunga line, which hasn’t been used for passengers for 37 years.
Project Dart reports that the rehabilitation of the Onehunga line is largely complete and there will also be significant work to upgrade eight road and pedestrian level crossings, and new signals laid along the line. The work on rehabilitating the existing single line began in October...
