Transport minister Steven Joyce launches his 10 year road safety strategy plan tomorrow morning but has already triggered a debate about the driving age. This after confirming the strategy will include the goverrnment’s plan to raise the minimum driving age by one year to 16. Freight Train Tries Out New Lynn’s Rail Underground – Photos & Video

Tonight, the first ever freight train to use New Lynn’s new underground rail trench and station passed through the station, heading north. Here’s a video of the freight train passing through the rail trench: The freight train run, was just under 11 hours before tomorrrow’s resumption of commuter train services between Britomart and New Lynn, using a temporary underground New Lynn station at Hetana Street. New Lynn’s New Temporary Train Station Almost Ready – Photos

Workers are putting the finishing touches to New Lynn’s new temporary train station, being used from Monday morning. The temporary station is inside the rail trench and trains will be running on a single track. Access to the train platform will be from new stairs at Hetana Street and stairs and a temporary lift at Memorial Drive. New Lynn’s first ever underground train passed through the station in the new rail trench at 5pm tonight. Here is a short video of it: The historic occasion was watched by a few of the workers who had been working on the site and a couple of trainspotters! An exciting development this coming weekend  for New Lynn’s new transport hub, opening about September From today week, a temporary station will be in place inside the trench and trains will be operating on a single track. The second track will be laid about June. From this Friday, over the weekend, workers will be toiling 24 hours day in the rail trench to remove part of the present temporary platform and prepare for the new rail to be laid on one side of the trench. Shelters are now emerging as part of the new New Lynn transport hub being built in the city and due to open in September. It’s an exciting project because bus and rail are both together in the same proximity and it’s alongside a shopping mall. Art Graces New Lynn Rail Trench – Photos

The Waitakere City Council is ensuring New Lynn’s new underground train station has an arts focus, in keeping with New Lynn’s art and pottery tradition (once home to New Zealand’s Crown Lynn pottery). Artist Louise Purvis was commissioned to lead a team to treat the trench walls with art featuring topographic lines to reflect New Lynn’s origin. The first of the 258 fibreglass-reinforced concrete panels have been now laid along the trench wall next to the station. It’s all quiet at New Lynn’s rail development at the moment while progress is made on the other rail projects around Auckland. But things are on course for a September opening of what will be an exciting transport centre development, including the rail trench and station. New Lynn’s train station and transport interchange project gets more exciting by the week. The trench walls are complete, and the concrete base slabs for the floor of the trench are steadily being laid as excavation continues. Work has begun on the cantilever walkway which will run along the southern side of the trench from the Clark St / Rankin Ave intersection to Hetana Street.
