Work continues to get Avondale’s St Georges Rd level crossing area ready.
Here’s how things look now:
As stated previously from KiwiRail:Barrier arms will be installed once the new signaling is completed. This will be in June, at the same time as Avondale Station and New Lynn, as all the signals in the area are interlocked. In the meantime we have the bells and lights in place as usual.

Finally, some construction progress at the Avondale train station.
Shelters have gone up or are in the process of such.
Construction of the new platforms, due to open around June, seemed to take a back seat over Christmas when other work such as Park Rd, Newmarket and Kingsland, took precedence.
It’s still some way of finishing but the signs today are looking more promising.

Readers have been asking if barrier arms are to be installed in the new St Georges Rd, Avondale, level crossing set-up.
Extensive work is being done at Avondale's St Georges Rd
I asked KiwiRail and they reply:
Barrier arms will be installed once the new signaling is completed. This will be in June, at the same time as Avondale Station and New Lynn, as all the signals in the area are interlocked. In the meantime we have the bells and lights in place as usual.
Thanks KiwiRail for that info.
Extensive work in the area took place over Christmas-January, as part of the laying of new track formation...

Buses replace Western Line trains between Avondale and New Lynn for the next two Sundays.
This is so work can continue at the new New Lynn station without trains passing through.
There is a revised train timetable for those buses here

At Avondale’s new train station, ARTA is about to start the steelwork for the canapoies for the station.
Work has been slow this year in favour of other priorities during the Christmas rail closedown but things will pick up now as the station needs to be ready in a few months.
Here’s how it looks this morning off Layard St:

Workers have begun installing a second track across Avondale’s St Georges Rd level crossing.
Extensive work is being undertaken in this area – and part of St Georges Rd was closed off to traffic so that the level crossing work can be done without accommodating traffic.
The work done since Christmas involves the second track being laid, the level crossing being upgraded and footpaths being improved.
With houses so close to the work, a slip road for properties on the western side of the road had to be constructed to prove a safe exit and entry point for residents to the properties...

Work is almost finished on the new level crossing upgrade at St Jude St, Avondale where the new rubber sealing makes it an less bumpy road for motorists crossing the tracks.
Motorists have started trying it out while avoiding the shower of metal as work continues.
Pedestrian “mazes” on the road and new barrier arms were designated for St Jude, Chalmers St and St Georges Rd level crossings and a new crossing at Blockhouse Bay Rd to ensure commuters can cross from one platform to the other.

Construction on the new Avondale train station is resuming.
It’s been quiet at the site over Christmas while other work was being done around Avondale.

Motorists crossing level crossings will soon get a less bumpy ride as they cross over the tracks.
I reported a month ago how in the South Island, when the new Arahura road-rail bridge opened, for the first time in the southern hemisphere, a rubber panel system was used in the roundabout level crossings.
This provides a rubber section which compresses and rebounds as trains travel over the crossing but at other times provides a flat crossing for motorists and cyclists.
I notice that rubber has started being used on level crossings around Auckland – for example, it’s now less bumpy when...

A tricky manoeuvre at St Georges Rd, Avondale this afternoon as part of laying new track formation between Avondale and Whau Creek.
The long piece of track had to be moved carefully from one side of the level crossing to the other side of the road. It took about half an hour.
Intensive work around St georges Rd is seeing a second track laid, the level crossing upgraded and laying new sleepers and track in the rail corridor between there and Whau Creek.
Workers have come from as far away as Napier for the next fortnight to help out.
New pavements, curbing and traffic islands will also be...

Intensive work continues to get Avondale new train station and surrounding track work completed.
There is no set date yet for the opening of the new Avondale station but it will be “mid” year.
This week, the main construction work involves lifting the tracks around St Jude St.
Then, until January 17 – while no trains are running – the new permanent track formation will be completed and level crossing work done.
An embankment on the southern side of St Jude St is being strengthened. There will also be work to strengthen the embankment to the south of St Jude Street, making...
