@Anthony wanted to see photos of the new look Pukerua Bay train station and I’m glad he asked.
Because it looks cool.
The original island platform was demolished and completely rebuilt as part of $1million worth of improvements to the station. It was re-opened a few days ago.
And here is how it looks: (Thanks KiwiRail Wellington for taking some photos so we could see):

Auckland, NEW ZEALAND
A nice well lit station. Pity about the ugly shelters.
sorry guys Im all in favour of public transport improvement but I dont see that much of an improvement for commuters for a million bucks… station location isnt too hot either…
I think there is a real issues here with the station work being done around wellyton with basic safety, security and shelter needs being overlooked…. Its honestly seems like the people doing the work have never actually had to wait for a train!!!
I give the Pukerua Train Shelter 1 out of 10. not cool
I think these improvements have been important as the platform didn’t meet the needs of the new trains. The improvements have allowed for easy installation of real time information. The station includes new bike parks as well (which cannot be seen in the pictures).
Now all they need to do is replace those crummy old poles which would have been erected in the 1930s.
If Muri station closes, I hope as a compromise, Pukerua bay will get a northern entrance via an over bridge and a new station shelter.
I look the look of it. reminds me of Ellerslie.
Hope we get some here like that, maybe Te papapa?
We are so fixated about Auckland’s improvements, i had forgotten about Wellington.
They must be so grateful to get new stations after decades of standing out in the wind and rain in run down shelters of stations.
I visited my cousin there a few years ago at Christmas and it was like something out of what you’d think was a couple of centuries ago!!
Good to see the progress.
I cant wait to visit Wellington when the new trains arrive and enjoy these new stations.
@ Henderson Kid- We aren’t getting new stations in Wellington (apart from Waikanae and Paraparaumu with the double tracking work), we are just getting new platforms.
The lighting looks pretty effective for security but not having been there Id just be commenting out of ignorance.
I was born in Wellington and trains were part of growing up. All this work will inspire me to think about going back to live.
The Pylons are slowly being replaced. You can see the concrete bases along the tracks.
Hey thanks! it’s actually quite nice, Im not too worried about the shelter because they can always get replaced a bit later.
I wonder why they kept the old shelter?
@Andrew – Platform modifications (& other work) required for the introduction of the Matangi units take priority. There is a limited amount of money and a number of stations to do. (Serious consideration is being given to closing Muri & Kenepuru due to very low usage and the high cost of bringing them up to standard.)
I wouldn’t mind if they closed the low usage stations as long as they stay put in case there is an increase in passenger patronage, like when the petrol price spiked a couple of years ago.
