The final concept design for the $23m Fort St shared space upgrade project has been approved, with some changes but some areas still being debated.
Changes agreed are:
- to extend the shared space paving to meet kerb lines (rather than building lines) to provide better clarity for pedestrians and vehicles between shared space areas and adjacent footpaths.
- develop a ‘flexible zone’ within some areas of the shared space that can be used for activities such as outdoor dining, loading and/or parking. introducing raised vehicle crossings at the junctions of Fort Street and Gore and Commerce streets to make vehicle entrances to adjacent buildings in the area more obvious and provide easy and safe pedestrian crossings
- change the Fort Lane paving to a single colour to better complement the lane’s character. including physical elements at corners to slow down and discourage vehicles cutting corners
- remove the kerb build out on Gore Street west to accommodate the coach and taxi drop off for the proposed hotel in the area.
- the traffic direction in Jean Batten Place
- the final parking plan, including restrictions for parking and loading in the area.
A number of other elements not currently part of the project are dependant on additional funding:
- a raised vehicle crossing at Shortland Street
- water collection for trees
- the proposed tidal marker
- a public toilet.
Work will be undertaken in three stages.
Stage 1: covers Fort Street west, Jean Batten Place and Shortland Street south. Starts mid next year and will be complete by July 2011.
Stage 2: includes Commerce Street, Gore Street, and the mid block of Fort. Starts toward the end of 2011 and will be completed by the end of 2012.
Stage 3: The remainder of Fort Street. Starts 2012 and will be completed by the end of 2012. The final configuration of the Eastern end will be determined following an evaluation process involving local stakeholders and businesses and a review of the first phase.

Where is the accommodation for cycling? If Auckland City is committed to increasing active methods of transport such as cycling (which it says it is) – shouldn’t there be some clear cycling infrastructure built into this plan?
If the roading in this area is being totally redeveloped, then this is the ideal opportunity to add these things!
Unity – It’s a shared space, which means exactly that, shared. The plan is for all forms of transport whom want to use the area to share it. Pedestrian transport is more important than cycling in this area.
Man, they are doing a lot more than I thought they would…

They’re having to compromise because of idiot shop-owners living in the 1960s thinking that people will drive into the city, park outside their shop and buy something from their shop before driving back to the suburbs.
The kerb lines should be at the buildings – as the whole point of a shared space is to remove the distinction between what is road and what is footpath. The compromises being made on this issue will potentially put the success of the shared space at risk.
Yes those shopkeeper battles continue over some of the unresolved aspects of the plan, Jarbury. Of course when I am Mayor of the supercity, such transport luddities will just have to do as they are told.
