In our enthusiasm about the forthcoming new electric trains, we can easily forget the state of our current ones.
There was a grim reminder today when a Britomart-bound train on the western line broke down in peak-time traffic this morning and had to limp to Morningside where it was abandoned as passengers had to get out and wait for the next one.
Amusingly, the announcer over the station’s loudspeakers kept warning people on the platform not to board the train as if it were about to blow up!
Peak-time train services were disrupted. The next train eventually arrived on the other platform.
And Stuff reports both mechanical faults and operational issues saw trains between Upper Hutt and Wellington cancelled this morning, and services on the Hutt Valley line were running up to 20 minutes late.
The 7.39am service from Porirua to Wellington ran with reduced capacity because of a mechanical issue, and earlier services were running up to 20 minutes late on the Paraparaumu line due to a signals fault.

Auckland, NEW ZEALAND
AND.. don’t forget that those ex-BR Mark 2 carriages may/will form part of our electric rolling stock hauled by EF locos (yes, the ones that haul freight/tourists between HAMN and PNTH…)
We have more carriages to fail than DC[P] locos…
William, why do you see those carriages as something that can fail? Aside from the fact that every single item of equipment in them is brand new, carriages are not generally something that can break down. The only thing I can think of is door problems, but the new EMU’s will be just as capable of that problem.
