So we’ve seen the new Newmarket train station and development around there and around the Remuera Rd bridge opposite the new station – but what’s happening around that corner in the Newmarket to Park Rd stretch?
The section of rail, between the current Boston Rd station and Kingdon St in Newmarket, is the penultimate stage of the Western line duplication project. Retaining walls are up. The second track will be laid beneath the Khyber Pass and Park Rds during the Christmas and NewYear period, by which time construction on this Grafton station will be in full swing with its opening around March.
Here are some close- up photos:

Up and a distinct improvement, but obviously KiwiRail/Ontrack are ‘relaxed’ about graffiti; they’ve neither attempted to address the issue in their design of the structure, nor have they controlled its explosion during the construction stage. It may be a brand new structure but it already looks dreadful, thereby condemning train travel as a sort of second rate form of transport; it’s ironic that you see very little graffiti on motorways and when you do, it’s removed within days, if not hours.
There is no point in removing graffiti until it opens, then you remove it within hours if it pops up.
WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN KINGDON ST STATION IS CLOSED, ARE WE GOING BACK TO THE DRIVER CHANGING TRAIN ENDS AT NEWMARKET ON THE WAITAKERE TO BRITOMART RUN
Yup!! Nothing but a ‘[third] world class’ rail network for Auckland!
It is till weird to see new iron laid in Auckland…
When I was in the UK earlier this year I used to sit on the train passing by people on community service cleaning off the graffiti on the railway corridors. Surely we could do something like that here. Im sure it will solve the problem (or at least go a long way to reducing graffiti).
