TE PAPAPA: Construction of the station begins

Construction has begun of the new Te Papapa station, which will be used for the Onehunga line, opening mid next year.

It’s between May Rd and Captain Springs Rd in what feels like Onehunga but is the tiny Auckland suburb called Te Papapa (don’t miss out the last few letters or the rail line will have to go to the Wellington waterfront to the government museum!).

It’s alongside an apartment block in the heart of a light industrial area. It’s apparently in the vicinity of an old Te Papapa station that existed when Onehunga services used to run.

Other stations on the Onehunga Line will be at Penrose and Onehunga at the old ITM hardware store site and there’s the possibility of one down the road from Penrose at Mt Smart, especially for when events like Warriors games and Big Day Out take place.

  1. Good to see progress at last. Thanks for the pics Jon :-)

  2. Thanks for the pics Jon, is there a firm start date for services?

I’ll be quite happy to use Onehunga in future to get to and from the airport when it’s only me travelling. Is there to be a airport connection service or a taxi/shuttle rank at least, at Onehunga Station? Might be a good one for our friends at CBT to work on? I suspect seeing their other good work around the place that they’re on to it already.

  3. George Darroch says:

Te Papapa is a fairly well developed industrial zone with a good number of businesses. I expect this station to be fairly well used.

  4. Is there room for a double track when it is needed next year? The apartments look pretty close

  5. Te Papapa station is right next to a large terraced housing complex so will be popular for these residents I would hope.
