When the announcement was made about the extension to the Northwestern motorway, promises were also made about the cycleway.
Tomorrow, construction will start on a new 1.2km stretch of cycleway built between Bond and Myrtle Streets in Kingsland to piece together the mainly off-road 12km route between central and west Auckland. This is great news for cyclists as it’s the missing link for which you presently have to use hilly backstreets.

Wow, that’s pretty awesome! I always wonder why the cars get all the unhilly routes
Excellent, we need to start getting cycling infrastructure moving in a big way… It is costing us too many useful lives currently…
I’m in favour of any improvements to the cycleway, but I wonder if any authority will be responsible of its maintenance. Broken glass is a common site on the cycle way from Newton to Henderson and it never appears to get clearer regularly. I’ve lost count of the number of flat tyres I have had over the past year.
