While we await announcements about funding for the electric trains and some certainty about integrated ticketing, motorway development is going at full steam ahead.
Another major roading project has been accelerated by the government.
Work towards the Hawke’s Bay Expressway southern extension was not scheduled to start until next year but this morning the transport minister turned the first sod to officially mark the start of construction.
The Hawke’s Bay Expressway southern extension will run between Hastings City and Flaxmere, providing a direct link between the roundabouts at Longlands Road and York Road.
Steven Joyce said the government recognised its importance and was able to bring the project forward as part of the government’s $500 million Jobs and Growth plan.

It was going to happen next year anyway so can’t have bee brought forward by much.
I think it’s more the point that roading projects are being brought forward while public transport projects are being stalled… An obvious bias…
