At last, someone has been charged in connection with the Tamaki Drive cycling accident, which led to a vigorous debate about cycling versus cars on the waterfront.
The Police statement reads:
Police investigating the September 26 crash on Tamaki Drive, St Heliers, when four cyclists were injured – one seriously – after being hit by a car, have summonsed a 20 year-old woman to appear in the Auckland District Court on December 7 where she will face four charges of careless driving causing injury.
The investigation by the Auckland City District Police Serious Crash Unit is ongoing.
The Auckland City Council recently organised a forum of interested parties to discuss better safety. The forum took the heat out of the issue as well as making some proposals, including safety improvements at the spot of the accident – the notorious intersection of Tamaki Drive and Ngapipi Road intersection. This will involve some electronic trigger and sign system to alert turning traffic to the presence of cyclists obscured by cars.
