The consultation process of the ARC’s exciting 30-year transport plan for Auckland will be launched on Friday.
As discussed here in several blog posts, the Regional Land Transport plan being publicly launched and looking to Auckland’s transport needs up to 2040, is an important document identifying the actions, funding and policies needed for a crucial part of Auckland’s development.
It deserves support and buy – in during the consultation process.
The great news for public transport advocates was that ARC has given much priority to public transport, including increasing the priority to projects dear to many of our hearts, such as the CBD loop and airport rail link.
The fear is this plan may become redundant as a new Wellington-controlled transport agency will direct policy as part of the re-structuring of Auckland’s local government and the government is sure to be very unhappy about the ARC’s emphasis on public transport, not roads.
But at least we will have, from Friday, on record a document that sends a clear message that the new agency will be buying a fight if it ignores what has been painstakingly thought through by the ARC .
If nothing else, the 30-year plan will be a great legacy of the way the ARC embraced public transport.
Heh. This strategy is the big middle finger to Steven Joyce. I love it.
We need to get one of the two main parties to accept it as the gospel… I wonder which..? Hmmm…
It is actually a very balanced strategy – close to the 50/50 funding split between roads and public transport that is needed. It still provides for AMETI and completing the Western Ring Route.
There is nothing really that new here, but what this strategy does is actually put a time frame all the empty talk we have had for decades about many of these projects. That is a huge step forwards.
