Now Auckland Mayor John Banks has added his weight to the growing call for an inner city rail tunnel.

Such a tunnel would solve the growing Britomart “dead end” problem – with trains having to increasingly wait before entering Britomart tunnel because there are only two lines available.

Planning has begun on a tunnel from Britomart to Mt Eden via Albert St, so creating the present Britomart station as a through station rather than the final stop.

This solution which would also create more inner city stops such as potentially a train stop at Auckland University although another debate is going on about exactly where the route should run.

But the tunnel will cost at least $1b and as always with great ideas in Auckland, finding the money becomes a hot political potato.

Auckland Mayor Banks, calling today for the Government super fund to be considered as a revenue source, is also raising the idea of the tunnel going as far as Kingsland – and says public transport is the key to developing Auckland as an international city.

Hear,hear.

Fantastic thinking.  Thanks Mr Mayor.
